Blessed are the poor in spirit - The words of Jesus.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matt 5:3

An interesting extract one might come away thinking how can poorness in spirit be good for us. Jesus is speaking to people and asking them to inspect their own status and to realize their need. Many are the people who go around thinking they are perfect/well balanced/in need of nothing either not interested in their spiritual lives or arrogantly thinking they have it covered. However Jesus is saying those who realize or who are honest with themselves and with God are blessed, the woman who touched Jesus knew she needed healing and reached out in desperation, the sinner on the cross reached out and was saved.

Our sin is often times glossed over or compared to others to make us feel better about ourselves, you know look how terrible such and such is "I'm better than they are" we lie to ourselves as if a lie can save us, but the blessing is for those who need it much like medicine is for the sick who go to the pharmacist or the medic in search of a form of healing.

We should be begging our Father for we neither have the price to pay for our poorness nor could we even work for it and the cost is to great that a whole life of work would never compensate, falling to our knees before the Perfect and Just Judge and begging for mercy.

It is a paradox blessed when poor in Spirit not because of our poorness but because of the one who can bless, because of the one who we turn to for blessing, for healing. A man who ignorantly continues forward to the end of a cliff is sure to fall down the cliff by his own doing and this conveyor belt we call life stops for no-one, however the one who calls out can be pulled off the conveyor belt and not taste the death laying in wait at the bottom of the cliff.

Our kingdom changes as we turn to Christ as we respond to his calling as we realize our need for the Savior we become part of the Kingdom of Heaven.

How fitting that we are now in the midst of the Christmas season when we remember it was God who sent His Son to be humbly born in flesh, placed in a manger, die on a cross. God knows our need and His answer is Jesus our Christ. We not only receive a new Spirit but also a place to call home.

So I pray that you have already received, or if not that you will receive this wonderful gift and that with a renewed Spirit and a new focus you can rejoice in Him.

God Bless.
